Another Christmas in the tropics, another great success. We've celebrated the birth of Jesus by stuffing our faces with food and giving each other presents. This Christmas we also got to witness a little miracle. Riben and Ani are our close friends and fellow laborers here in Palu. Ibu Ani has had a rough pregnancy with a lot of health problems. A few days ago she was admitted to the hospital with a high fever and malaria symptoms. The on duty doctor at the hospital was concerned for the health of her baby and requested an ultrasound check. The results of which showed that she was already two weeks past her due date (the 8th of Dec, not the middle of Jan as she was told at her last ultrasound). Due to some issues with the amniotic fluid she was scheduled for an emergency cesarean. I must admit that at this stage I was very worried for them. We've seen so much tragedy since we came to Palu, I almost expect things to go wrong. Thankfully the surgery went well, and little Gideon was born late evening the 23rd of December.

Not a whole lot has happened here lately, we seem to have steered clear of further accidents and any serious illnesses. All we need now is a foot or two of nice powdery snow so we can celebrate Christmas. With an average temperature up in the 30's I'm not too hopeful. The kids don't seem to mind the very un-Christmas like climate at all, and have been very busy with crafts and card making. Yesterday we even built a gingerbread house and decorated it with a physics defying amount of candy (not sure how the thing is still standing). Due to ants and other crawling little demon spawn we've had to stick the whole thing in the fridge. We're not expecting the house to survive the weekend unless we padlock the fridge, as it's in easy reach of three very sneaky little monkeys.
Here are a few pictures taken over the last couple of weeks. |
